New EPA Lead Model Enables Better Decision Making
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released an updated version of its All Ages Lead Model (AALM), a tool that is publicly available for understanding the impacts of lead consumption through drinking water. The model allows decision makers—including politicians, utilities, and administrators—to make more informed decisions regarding lead prioritization.
The tool allows for users to gain a fuller understanding of the effects of lead exposure for anyone aged zero to ninety. It informs users of how much of a lead threat an individual faces given exposure from any combination of lead in air, water, food, dust, soil, and other sources. Groups like Unleaded Kids praise the tool for being accessible to a variety of users and for undergoing a rigorous evaluation from the Science Advisory Board. The tool can be accessed here, and a user guide can be found here.
