Government Shutdown Next Week Still a Possibility

The current Continuing Resolution (CR) to fund the federal government expires at midnight next Friday, March 14. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) is pursuing a stopgap bill to keep current spending levels as-is from March 14 through September 30, the end of the federal fiscal year. That CR strategy will test the Speaker’s ability to keep the government open with only Republican votes. If the effort fails, a series of short-term funding bills is another possibility. Clearly, next week will be full of lots of discussions about the possibilities for federal funding, and a government shutdown is a possibility, but not likely.
