EPA Adds Nine Additional PFAS to the Toxics Release Inventory

On January 3, EPA announced the automatic addition of nine PFAS to the list of chemicals covered by the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) under the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA). These nine PFAS were added to the TRI list per the 2020 National Defense Authorization Act, that automatically adds certain PFAS each year after toxicity values are finalized by the Agency. The TRI facility reporting data includes quantities of chemicals released into the environment or otherwise managed as waste. The TRI data is available online to help support decision-making by companies, government, non-governmental organizations, and the public.

Adding these nine PFAS will make a total of 205 PFAS currently subject to the TRI for the 2025 reporting year. In addition, all PFAS on the TRI are now classified as chemicals of special concern, per EPA’s action in October 2023 that removes the reporting exemption for facilities using PFAS in small concentrations.
