Congress Continues Working on Releasing the Water Infrastructure Funding
As of today (2/4), the Federal government is operating under a continuing resolution (CR) through February 18th that provides funding at previous fiscal year (FY) levels. In an ideal world, FY 2022 funding measures (an omnibus appropriations bill) would be passed before the 18th, and then sent to the President for his signature. Given current events in Congress, it’s challenging to predict whether an omnibus bill will be passed over the next two weeks. This is concerning, as full funding of the recently enacted bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) is linked to apporiations. The omnibus bill would provide the first year of increased Federal investment within the five years of increased funding for water infrastructure. A CR continues funding at the previous FY levels and, therefore, blocks the release of the water infrastructure funding under the IIJA.
