Manure Connected to Lake Erie Toxic Algae
EWG has released a report entitled “Explosion of Unregulated Factory Farms in Maumee Watershed Fuels Lake Erie’s Toxic Blooms’” that suggests that nutrients (and more specifically phosphorus) from expanding dairy, cattle, hog, and poultry operations can be attributed to the growth of harmful algal blooms in Lake Erie. Satellite imaging and aerial photography were used to identify and map these operations in the Maumee River watershed and assess how they have grown.
