New Guide Contrasting FIFRA and SDWA Approval for Disinfectants

A new Quick Reference Guide from EPA clarifies the difference in approvals for drinking water disinfectants between the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) and the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA).  Some disinfectants used in drinking water treatment may also come under regulation as a pesticide product under FIFRA.  This has been an issue when applying secondary treatment in building water systems to control Legionella and other pathogens.  The guide explains the differences between requirements, and provides a flow chart to help guide users through the process under both Acts.  The flow chart also includes appropriate references to state consultation and approval for treatment technologies.  You can access the Guide at https://www.epa.gov/pesticides/new-epa-quick-guide-registering-disinfectant-products-drinking-water-use.
