AWWA Publishes Paper on Survey of States’ Approvals of New Technologies
The August 2017 issue of Journal-AWWA contains a paper on state barriers to approval of drinking water technologies. ASDWA assisted with this research by identifying key contacts within the states and reviewing the survey questions. States were surveyed to identify barriers with the approvals of 14 different treatment technologies, ranging from membranes to ultraviolet (UV) disinfection to aeration to remove Total Trihalomethanes (TTHMs).
Key barriers included an overall lack of staff time and training (and that issue is not going away in the current fiscal environment), variable data from the equipment manufacturers (including the breadth and depth of pilot testing data), and the lack of independent testing and evaluation that states feel comfortable with. Sharing technology approval experiences between states is also a key need.
