The Washington State Department of Health is searching for an innovative and collaborative human resource leader to fill the position of Deputy Director of Operations. This position is located in Tumwater, Washington. (Recruitment # DOH2475)
Reporting to the Office of Drinking Water Director, the Deputy Director of Operations is responsible for directing and coordinating the Office of Drinking Water’s statewide operations performed out of three regional offices (Spokane, Kent, and Tumwater) and the Headquarter office in Tumwater. S/he directly supervises four (4) WMS positions (regional office managers and the Operator Certification and Training manager), the State Engineer, and an administrative assistant. In addition to its direct reports, this position works closely with the Deputy Director for Central Services, and with the Office Director, to assure that about 5.75 million Washington residents who get their drinking water from more than 17,000 regulated public water systems have safe and reliable drinking water no matter where in the state they live, work, and play.
The scope of the Deputy Director of Operations position is far-reaching and highly accountable to achieve the greatest public health protection possible. The broad scope of accountability requires use of advanced skills in communication to lay and technical audiences, facilitation, negotiation, and consensus-building. S/he often handles politically sensitive issues and is directed to broker solutions to escalated or complex situations, usually requiring interaction with the Office of the Secretary, the governor’s office, state legislators, and federal officials.
