Reduction of Lead in Drinking Water Act – Webinar on Fire Hydrants
EPA is hosting a webinar on the Reduction of Lead in Drinking Water Act as it relates to fire hydrants on November 25, 2013 from 2:30pm – 5:00pm EST. The webinar will consider issues raised by question #5 of the Summary of the Reduction of Lead in Drinking Water Act Frequently asked Questions (http://water.epa.gov/drink/info/lead/upload/epa815s13001.pdf). EPA remains interested in feedback on this FAQ, in terms of possible refinement of the answer, to respond to new questions, or to determine which issues should be explored in a future rulemaking.
Webinar Purpose:
- Discuss the applicability of the Act with respect to fire hydrants.
- Obtain information from Public Water systems (PWS) on the use of fire hydrants to supply drinking water.
- Obtain information on current fire hydrant manufacturing processes and inventory.
- Gain insight into fire hydrant manufacturers and PWS concerns and potential impacts to these groups.

EPA is interested in obtaining feedback on the following questions:
- What is the frequency and duration of potable water uses of fire hydrants?
- What are the challenges of converting the existing manufacturing processes and the supply chains to lead free hydrants in the open position?
- What are the concerns with utilizing low lead brass on the upper portions of hydrants and the impacts on the reliability of the hydrants for fire protection?
